Wentworth Miller Confirms He Is Gay

Former “Prison Break” star Wentworth Miller has publicly confirmed he is gay.

The actor, who reportedly had previously denied he was gay back in 2007, revealed the news in an open letter to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, which was posted on GLAAD’s website on Wednesday.

The letter suggests that Miller had been invited as a guest of honor to the event in Russia and his response contained the confirmation about his sexuality.

“As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes,” his letter began. “However, as a gay man, I must decline.”

Miller went on to note that he is disturbed by the current atmosphere toward the gay and lesbian community in Russia, where there is an anti-gay propaganda law.

“I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly,” he wrote.

“Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice,” his letter concluded.

While Miller’s sexuality has been the subject of tabloid speculation for years, the letter is the first public confirmation from the actor.

In 2007, in an interview with the Australian Associated Press, per TowleRoad, the actor said he was straight.

“I’m not gay, but that rumor can’t be killed,” he reportedly said at the time. “I know these rumors are out there … I’m cool with the fact that they exist, I mean this is about fantasy. Certain people are going to have certain fantasies, if someone wants to imagine me with a woman, or a man or one of each that’s cool with me as long as you keep watching the show.”
