Wentworth Miller & Dominic Purcell Talk Teaming Up & Taking On ‘The Flash’

“The Flash” is back and Tuesday’s new episode provides the on screen television reunion between “Prison Break’s” Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell.

“For me, it’s just exciting working with Wentworth again,” Dominic Purcell, who joins the drama for the first time as Heat Wave/Mick Rory, told Access Hollywood at the Television Critics Association Winter Tour, when we sat down with the co-stars and friends. “That was my initial motivation to do the show. Getting on set was a revelation. I’m enjoying myself wearing big, broad costumes, being as cheesy and as huge as you can possibly be. Yeah, it’s exciting.”

Wentworth, who made his debut as Captain Cold/Leonard Snart, in the fall on “The Flash,” was the one who got Dominic on board. He suggested his “Prison Break” co-star for the role when Geoff Johns (a producer on the show and DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer) asked for a recommendation.

“He said, ‘We’re trying to cast this character Heat Wave. [He’s] like a hothead, edgy, aggressive, unpredictable, kind of cool. Do you have any actors you can recommend?’ and Dominic Purcell was the only name that came to mind,” Wentworth said.

For Dominic, it was less about the role, and more about teaming up with his friend on screen again that made him say yes.

“Wentworth got in touch with me and said, ‘Would I be interested in coming on the show?’ I said, ‘Absolutely,’ just to work with Wentworth,” he said.

The two actually flew up to Vancouver, B.C., where the show is filmed, together.

“We sat together and just ate M&Ms the whole way,” Dominic said.

“I ate the M&Ms. He did not,” Wentworth chimed in.

“He ate the M&Ms, I ate the broccoli,” Dominic clarified.

Where as Captain Cold is calculating, Heat Wave is another animal altogether.

“I think what Heat Wave is, is actually, he’s a charismatic, funny psychopath,” Dominic said.

“Likable,” added Wentworth.

“He’s likable, he’s funny. I mean, his actions are just hysterical. He’s out of control,” Dominic said.

As for how the two characters (part of the Rogues gallery) fit into this Tuesday’s “The Flash,” it all comes down to mastermind Leonard.

“I enlist him,” Wentworth told Access. “We were partners in crime way back when. Something went down that wasn’t particularly positive, but I say, ‘Look, the game’s changed. There’s all these guys running around with super powers. We need to band together if we’re gonna keep our stake in our city.”

Dominic said that the relationship the two characters have is similar to the last time they were co-stars.

“He’s the boss, as is always the case when we work together. He’s in charge. ‘Prison Break,’ he was in charge. I mean, he’s the brains, I’m the muscle. That’s why we work so well together,” the actor said.

For Wentworth, working so closely with Dominic again as a team is something he realizes is special in TV.

“When I found out Dom was going to do the show, I thought, how kind of rare and radical because I can’t think of too many other examples where you’ve got two characters who are so closely attached to one show appearing on another show playing different characters. It’s really unusual. Unique,” Wentworth said.

Dominic said doing The CW show has actually increased his cool factor on a personal level.

“It’s funny because my kids — my own children — they’re like, ‘Dad! This is the coolest thing you’ve ever done,'” he recounted.

“The thing about ‘Prison Break’ is because it’s on Netflix, we have new fans coming on board, so it’s never ending, but now we’re touching into these – the fan boys, the 15 year olds and it’s good for us,” Dominic said. “It’s a nice change up.”

“The Flash” returns on Tuesday at 8/7c on The CW.
