What Sent Dennis Quaid’s Twins To The Hospital In The First Place?

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (November 28, 2007) – It’s been just over a week since the tragic news broke of Dennis Quaid’s newborn twins fighting for their lives after a preventable hospital accident.

But now, it’s finally been revealed why the babies were brought to the hospital in the first place, just two weeks after being born.

In a candid interview, Blake Buffington, the brother of Dennis Quaid’s wife Kimberly, spoke with People about his sister’s terrifying ordeal.

“One of the twins had an infection near their belly button, near where the umbilical cord was and that was the beginning of this process,” People magazine’s senior editor J.D. Heyman told Access Hollywood after the interview with Buffington. “The kids are still in the hospital. They are still receiving intensive care.”

After being admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for a common staph infection, which turned potentially deadly, the twins were hooked up to IVs that were flushed with 1,000 times the correct dosage of Heparin – a blood thinner.

But as the less-than-a-month old babies continue to battle for survival, it seems their birth itself was nothing short of a miracle for Quaid and his wife Kimberly.

“Kimberly Quaid had five miscarriages,” Heyman told Access. “She was unable to conceive naturally, so they decided to use a gestational carrier.”

Son Thomas Boone was born at 8:26AM., weighing 6 lb., 12 oz., while his sister Zoe Grace followed two minutes later, weighing 5 lb., 9 oz. Both children were born via a surrogate mother.

And now, mom and dad are just hoping for a full house for the holidays.

“Dennis and Kimberly Quaid are just praying that everything is fine and they’re just relieved that their children seem to be making it,” Heyman added.
