Woody Harrelson Joins ‘The Hunger Games’ As Haymitch Abernathy

“The Hunger Games” has found it Haymitch Abernathy.

Lionsgate announced on Tuesday that Woody Harrelson will star as the curmudgeonly alcoholic mentor to District 12 tributes Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – and the only District 12 resident to ever win the deadly games.

“Haymitch is such an unforgettable character: funny, cranky, outrageous, sarcastic, impatient, biting but ultimately kind. I’m so grateful we have Woody Harrelson to play him. I can’t wait for us to get to work,” director Gary Ross said in a statement.

Other recent casting announcements include, Stanley Tucci, who will star as Caesar Flickerman, the host of the Hunger Games, and Wes Bentley as Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane.

“The Hunger Games” will hit theaters on March 23, 2012.
