Anne Hathaway Called James Franco After His Less Than Flattering Remarks Over Her Oscar Hosting Style

Anne Hathaway has admitted she had a talk with her 2011 Oscars co-host James Franco after he discussed her enthusiastic hosting performance on the “Late Show with David Letterman” in less than flattering terms.

In late March, James hit Letterman’s couch where he responded to criticism over his own casual stage demeanor at the Oscars, telling the late night host, “the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to [Anne].”

“How did I take it? I let James know that a whirling dervish is a more flattering comparison than a Tasmanian devil,” Anne told Harper’s Bazaar, which features the actress on its August 2011 cover, when asked about James’ remarks.

“I called him, and we e-mailed a bit,” she continued. “In the grand scheme of things, I got to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I met great people, wore beautiful clothes. And I got to put on a show. I don’t see a downside. Anyone who disliked my personality probably disliked my personality before the Oscars.”

Beyond talk of the Oscars, Anne opened up about her boyfriend, fellow actor Adam Shulman, telling the magazine things with the couple are in a good place.

“So far, it’s worked out great,” she told the mag.

Anne added she used to get caught up in romances, “which has its wonderful side, of course…but also it was exhausting, and sometimes it would freak me out. Mellow doesn’t always make for a good story, but it makes for a good life.”

Although it appears she did not mention former boyfriend, the now-jailed Raffaello Follieri, by name, the actress said her need to be a people pleaser broke up her previous relationship.

“There’s something very addictive about people pleasing,” she said. “It’s a thought pattern and a habit that feels really, really good until it becomes desperate. It’s one of the reasons that relationship ended. I wasn’t able to grow or foster anything. I think a lot of girls have that story. It’s a big moment when you step away from that and say, ‘I’m going to be exactly who I am. And I’m going to be brave enough to only be with someone who wants me the way I am.’”
