Bret Michaels Laments Leaving ‘Spandex’ Behind

After a harrowing year, which included several major health incidents, Bret Michaels is standing strong – and naked – on the cover of Billboard magazine.

The Poison frontman, sometime solo-artist and winner of Donald Trump’s “The Celebrity Apprentice” title is heading back to reality television with VH1’s “Life As I Know It.”

“It’s an all-access backstage pass into my everyday life, about finding balance between my passion for my family, my relationship with [girlfriend] Kristi [Gibson] and being on the road,” he told Billboard.

Bret, who became a reality star with three seasons of “Rock of Love” on VH1, a show which chronicled his search for love from a house full of bombshells, said when he was initially approached by the network, they wanted a different guy.

“They wanted the 1986 Bret Michaels. My fans enjoyed the teased hair, the spandex. It was great, it was the time I lived in,” he told the music publication. “Who knew that spandex tucked into cowboy boots would ever go out of style? But for some strange reason, it did.”

While he’s begrudgingly had to retire his ‘80s lycra man pants, Bret has come to terms with some adjectives the media has used to describe him in recent years as a result of his reality shows.

“Writers always use the phrase ‘aging rocker,’ and I’m like, “What other option do I have?” You’re either aging or you’re dead. So I’m embracing it,” he said.
