Downton Abbey’s Sophie McShera Gears Up For Disney’s Cinderella

“Downton Abbey’s” Sophie McShera (Daisy) is heading upstairs for her newest project, which is set to begin filming in England shortly – Disney’s “Cinderella.”

In a twist, Sophie will actually play one of the evil step sisters — Drizella – to her “Downton” co-star, Lily James, who is playing the titular character. (On “Downton” Lily plays Lady Rose, one of the members of the family who Sophie’s character, Daisy, cooks for.)

“It’s very exciting ‘cause I’m going upstairs and Lily’s going downstairs. Tables have turned! I’m gonna be lording it over her. I’m going to be so cruel,” Sophie joked when AccessHollywood.com spoke to her at PBS’ Television Critics Association Summer Tour day last week.

“The Borgias” actress Holliday Grainger (she played Lucrezia Borgia), plays Sophie’s on-screen sister, Anastasia, and the wicked stepmother, Lady Tremaine – will be played by Cate Blanchett.

“We’re so excited to meet her. We need to have a family bonding day, surely,” Sophie said of meeting Cate.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Kenneth Branagh is directing the picture and Sophie is looking forward to working him.

“He seems so cool,” she said. “It’s gonna be really nice.”

Also on board is Richard Madden from “Game of Thrones,” who is playing Prince Charming.

He told Access at San Diego Comic-Con that the new version of “Cinderella” will be “very true to the tale of the story.”

“There’s little changes happening now, so I’m not sure where it’s going to go, but it’s the story of Cinderella, we know it and it’s an amazing cast with an outstanding director, so it’s going to be really exciting,” he said.

“Cinderella” is expected to hit theaters in 2015. Sophie’s Masterpiece on PBS series, “Downton Abbey,” returns on January 5, 2014 with its fourth season.
