The 2014 Golden Globe nominations have been announced with quite a few surprises and, as always, some serious snubs!
It was a good morning for “12 Years a Slave” and “American Hustle,” who each earned seven nominations – also a very good indicator that Oscar nominations could follow.
On the TV side, Emmy favorite “Breaking Bad” scored three nods, while “House of Cards” and the HBO movie “Behind the Candelabra” topped the small screen categories with four nominations apiece.
AccessHollywood.com takes a closer look at the surprise nominations and those who were snubbed!
Snubs!:
- “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” was completely shut out of the race after Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey scored SAG Awards nominations on Wednesday.
- “The Wolf of Wall Street” scored a Best Picture, Drama nod, but director Martin Scorsese was passed over.
- More director snubs included Spike Jonze for “Her” and Joel and Ethan Coen for “Inside Llewyn Davis” after both films earned nominations.
- Michael B. Jordan and his critically acclaimed “Fruitvale Station” were also passed over
- Last year’s Golden Globe darlings Claire Danes and Damian Lewis – who both took home trophies for “Homeland” last year – were left out, as was their Showtime series.
- “The Walking Dead,” “Mad Men” and “Game of Thrones” and all the cast of “Modern Family” (with the exception of Sofia Vergara) were also pushed aside this year.

Surprises!:
- Andy Samberg and his Fox comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” managed to score two nominations.
- Showtime’s “Masters of Sex” surprised many with a nomination for the freshman series and star Michael Sheen was also honored.
- Tatiana Maslany from BBC America’s “Orphan Black” delighted and surprised the show’s fans earning a nod.
- “Rush” and “Philomena,” two films that have gone somewhat under the radar, both scored two major noms.
- Justin Timberlake and T Bone Burnett earned a nod for the song, “Please Mr. Kennedy” from “Inside Llewyn Davis” (a ‘60s song they rewrote with the help of Joel and Ethan Cohen for their folk music movie).
- Indie darlings Julie Delpy scored a nod for “Before Midnight” as did and “Frances Ha’s” Greta Gerwig.
The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards will air live on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 8 PM ET and 5 PM PT on NBC with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returning for the second year in a row as hosts.
