Iddo Goldberg On Suiting Up As Red Tornado & Taking On ‘Supergirl’

Two months after fans got a first look at Iddo Goldberg
suited up as the Red Tornado, the actor will finally make his
“Supergirl” TV debut.

On Monday night, Supergirl will get to unleash some
super-powered steam as she tests out the limits of the military’s latest
weapon, Red Tornado — or what Iddo’s other character, Dr. T.O. Morrow,
describes as an “anthropomorphic pseudo entity with combat capabilities.”

As he prepped for the role, Iddo told the folks in charge of
stunts and fight training for the CBS drama that he was ready for anything.

“I made it very clear to them before we started that I wanted to get as down and dirty as possible and I was up for all of that physical stuff,” Iddo told Access.

“The thing [with] stunt training and fight training is that you end up doing a lot of it and then you get to set and the geography of the set is completely different to the space you’ve been rehearsing and everything has to change very quickly. That’s usually what I’ve found,” he continued. “And also, on the day, everything is just a lot more exciting and you really just get into and it was so much fun.”

Preparations to take on the Red Tornado character in “Supergirl” meant a number of wardrobe fittings for the actor.

“This thing just kind of transformed over time and I had to have quite a few fittings for it because it was one of those outfits that I was really going to have to be able to move quite a lot in, so everything had to be quite specific and I just kept on coming back for more and more fittings as this costume was being built for me and it was just so exciting,” he said. “I remember going for one of my fittings thinking I was going to see all of it and I remember going to the fitting and they said, ‘Oh, no, they’re not doing that full fitting until Monday,’ and I was genuinely disappointed.”

Iddo said he felt the significance of the job when work was being done on the Red Tornado headpiece.

“I just remember being there with this mold covering my whole head and just thinking how lucky I was to be in that position because I don’t know when I’m going to play a supervillain again. I don’t know when that’s going to happen and I got to play two characters as well so it was real treat and like I was saying, as the fittings process progressed, I just found myself getting more and more excited. I just couldn’t wait to start,” he said.

In Monday’s episode, something is set to go wrong and the Red Tornado will whirl its way toward Kara’s town, with potential to cause major destruction.

“You will definitely see me creating havoc in National City and I can also tell you that for one of the havoc sequences they had to shut down a huge street to film it in and it was pretty amazing,” Iddo said of the Southern California-shot show. “It was so grand and big and you read it in the script and you think to yourself, yeah, I can see how that’s going to happen, and then, when I got there, it was a big, big, big road shut down for this sequence and I think it’s going to be brilliant.”

Monday night, viewers will get to see just how Kara/Supergirl deals with the Red Tornado problem. And, should his character survive, Iddo would return to the show in a flash.

“I had a great time on the set and everyone there really knows what they’re doing, and it’s a beautifully oiled machine and the cast was so much fun to be with — really welcoming,” he said, adding, “I would definitely come back.”

“Supergirl” airs Monday at 8/7c on CBS.
