Neil Patrick Harris: Octavia Spencer Wasn’t Warned About Oscars Gag

One of Oscar night’s longest running gags on Sunday was Neil Patrick Harris asking Octavia Spencer to keep an eye on his predictions for the night.

According to the host, the actress was completely kept in the dark that she would be part of the show.

“No not at all, she knew nothing about it at all,” NPH told Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson after the Oscars on Sunday.

“We hid a mic in the seat in front of her, so you could hear what she was saying, but she wasn’t [wearing a mic] at all,” he explained. “All of the stuff in the audience no one knew anything, which was very important to me.”

In fact, there was even more of the gag (which some on social media criticized) than the audience saw.

“There was a lot more Octavia Spencer comedy that we were intending to do, but I didn’t want that prediction box trick to seem like a comedy sketch,” he said.

Speaking of things the audience saw, the host was quick to tell Shaun that his underwear moment was all him!

“It was not CGI’d!” Neil said of his goods.

So how was NPH feeling after his hosting gig wrapped?

“I felt good, I felt good. It’s a marathon show,” he told Shaun.
