Oscars Snubs 2015: Jennifer Aniston, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ava DuVernay & ‘Lego Movie’

The 87th Annual Academy Award nominations were announced Thursday morning with some notable serious snubs, as some of this year’s favorite big screen performances and films failed to earn Oscar nominations.

“The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Birdman” led the Oscar noms with nine each, but some actors, actresses, directors and films (who were previously recognized by the Golden Globes) received few or no nods from the Academy.

Here is AccessHollywood.com’s snub breakdown by category:

Best Picture

With two spots left vacant (10 films are usually eligible), we’re surprised the Academy didn’t throw some love towards “Nightcrawler,” “Foxcatcher,” “Interstellar,” “Gone Girl,” “Unbroken” or possibly go out on a limb and nominate a not-so-Oscar movie like “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

Best Actor

Was Jake Gyllenhaal’s stellar performance in “Nightcrawler” too dark for Academy voters? Despite a Globe nod for one of the actor’s best performances ever, Jake was ignored. “Selma” star David Oyelowo, who many thought would earn a nomination, was also left out.

Best Actress

Many fans were hoping to hear Jennifer Aniston’s name announced for her highly praised role in “Cake” (after all, she scored a Golden Globe nomination), but the actress was skipped over. Many are saying Marion Cotillard’s nod for “Two Days, One Night” edged Jen out of the race.

Best Documentary Feature

Many thought the well-received Roger Ebert doc “Life Itself” would be recognized by the Academy, but it was passed over.

Best Animated Feature

Everything was not awesome for the creative team behind “The Lego Movie,” which did score a Best Song nod, but failed to build (see what we did there!) enough momentum for a nomination. We did love the film’s co-director’s response to the snub though.

Best Director

The field of nominees this year is all men (come on Academy!) with “Selma” director Ava DuVernay failing to score a nod. “American Sniper” director Clint Eastwood and “Gone Girl” director David Fincher were also passed over by the Academy.
