Paula Deen’s Sons Defend Their Mom Over N-Word Controversy

Paula Deen’s sons insist their mother does not use the N-word, nor did she raise her children to use the racial slur.

“That word, that horrifying terrible word that exists and I abhor it coming from any person, is not in my vocabulary, it’s definitely not in my brother’s vocabulary, it’s not in my mother’s vocabulary,” Bobby Deen told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Tuesday’s “New Day.” “We were not raised in a home where that word was used and that’s not who we are, that’s not the home that we were raised in.”

Bobby explained that his mother confirmed she used the slur at some point in her past during a recent deposition in a discrimination lawsuit filed against the celebrity chef, because he said she is a truthful person.

“She was in a deposition under oath. Our mother is gonna do nothing but answer the truth,” he said. “Look, we can look in the mirror and know who we are and how we were raised and the character of our parents. Our mother is not the picture that’s being painted… It’s inaccurate what people are saying about her.”

Jamie also defended his mother and suggested she may have used the word in the past because of how she was raised.

“Mom’s sincere in all things that she does,” he said. “It was a different time when my mother was growing up. There’s been leaps and bounds generationally that [have] helped the chasm that we have of racism in this country. “

Jamie said they appeared on the CNN show to stand up for their mother.

“We’re here to speak out for our mother’s character and to say that our mother is a truly wonderful [person, who] is inclusive of all people,” he said.

Paula Deen is currently being sued by former employee Lisa Jackson for discrimination. Deen’s admission to using the word – in the past – was revealed when a deposition transcript for the suit was made public.
