Roll Call: Chappelle’s Hospital Run & Lindsay’s Good Clean Fun

Your Daily Dispatch of Celebrity Shenanigans: July 18, 2007 by Tommy Vergason

PARTYING RESPONSIBLY CAN BE FUN: Lindsay Lohan continues to be a fixture on the club scene, USMAGAZINE.COM reports, but she’s having her fun without the influence of alcohol. According to the report, Lindsay’s latest club outing (following this weekend’s appearance at Vegas club PURE, pictured) was at L.A. hotspot Winston’s on Monday night. The recently-rehabilitated actress reportedly arrived with a group of friends around midnight, seating themselves in a booth near the DJ and a table occupied by “Fantastic Four” star Chris Evans and “The O.C.‘s” Adam Brody. US reports that Lindsay greeted the two men, and “flirted” with Evans, but kept things strictly platonic throughout the night. Lohan and her friends reportedly drank only water and Red Bull as they danced the night away — and had a bit of “irony-filled fun” as they sang along to the Amy Winehouse anthem, “Rehab.” Following the departure of Evans and Brody, Lohan and her pals reportedly continued to relax and dance until the club closed. While some may question Lindsay’s reported club outings since completing her residential phase of rehab last week, her rep told that there’s no reason to be concerned: “On her own, she has also made the decision in support of her sobriety to wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet. In part she is wearing the bracelet so there are no questions about her sobriety if she chooses to go dancing or dining in a place where alcohol is served,” her rep stated. The report from US indicates that Lindsay’s ankle bracelet was “discreetly out of sight” on Monday night, presumably covered by the jeans she was wearing.

CHAPPELLE: EXHAUSTED, BUT OKAY: Comedian Dave Chappelle was reportedly hospitalized for exhaustion in San Francisco this weekend, but his publicist told THE ASSOCIATED PRESS that “he’s fine.” He was reportedly admitted to the emergency room on Saturday, and released a few hours later. “It was exhaustion; he had been traveling,” said publicist Carla Sims, declining to release any further details. E! ONLINE spoke with Chappelle’s friend, Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada, who said that he had talked with Chappelle following the hospital visit. “He stayed up and did a show [at the Punch Line Comedy Club]?and at the time he did it, he did not get enough water to drink and had a little bit of dehydration,” Masada reportedly said. “I spoke to him and he’s okay.” Masada reportedly added that Chappelle “gets so creative, he forgets to eat and drink…He’s on the stage for six or seven hours. Everybody would have a bottle of water and he’ll have nothing.” As previously reported, Chappelle broke the Laugh Factory record for the longest stand-up routine in April, when he clocked in at six hours and seven minutes on stage at the Hollywood club.

DON’T ASK: Rocker Joel Madden is keeping mum about himself and girlfriend Nicole Richie, despite rampant rumors surrounding the pair. The Good Charlotte frontman was interviewed by Pennsylvania radio station WKRZ yesterday, and he refused to divulge any information about Richie (who has been the subject of pregnancy rumors). When DJ Kelly K. said to Madden, “I have to ask, are you gonna be a daddy?,” Joel cut her off before she could go any further. “You don’t have to ask, you want to ask. I won’t answer…I don’t speak about home at work,” he said. Madden forced Kelly to change the subject when he stated, “It’s my rule. It kills people, I guess, but yeah, I don’t talk about it.” You can view video of the exchange at KRZ’s official Web site.

WEDDING BELLS AREN’T RINGING: Ashlee Simpson and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz have put the kibosh on rumors that they are planning to tie the knot. Simpson’s rep reportedly told USMAGAZINE.COM that rumors of their impending nuptials are “absolutely not true.” Additionally, THE NY POST’s PAGE SIX reports that Wentz DJ’d at Hamptons club Dune on Friday night, and he reportedly said “no way” to club promoters Alan Philips and Josh Shames when they asked him about marriage. While a wedding may not be in the couple’s plans, their relationship is reportedly still going strong. PAGE SIX adds in their report that Simpson accompanied Wentz to his Hamptons gig on Friday, and that she helped him cope with his fear of flying as they traveled in a sea plane. “She keeps me calm so I am able to handle it,” he is quoted as saying. “We saw a rainbow, and I photographed it on my new iPhone.”

CRUZ CLEARS THE AIR: Penelope Cruz has responded to rumors that she is romantically linked to actor Javier Bardem, PEOPLE reports. The pair are about to start shooting a new Woody Allen movie in Spain, and the actress denied reports that they are a couple. “It’s not true,” she reportedly told reporters Monday night, as she and her sister unveiled their new clothing line, Mango, in Spain. “He’s a friend and the best actor in the world.” As for the film’s other co-star, Scarlett Johannson, Cruz said that she’s excited to be working with her. “We have a lot of scenes together,” Cruz reportedly told PEOPLE. “Scarlett’s very sweet. I’ve met her a few times just around. I’m so excited for this film. I’ve been going around saying my lines everywhere.”

OPRAH’S LOSS (AND GAIN): And finally, a bit of sad news: Oprah Winfrey has written a statement in remembrance of her 2 year-old Golden Retriever Gracie, who died in May by choking on a plastic ball. “Weeks have passed. And the pain has not subsided,” she writes in the new issue of O, THE OPRAH MAGAZINE. “Every time I think about it, my heart starts racing and I feel like I just got stabbed in the chest. It’s a jolt, still. Gracie’s death.” She describes the details of the dog’s passing in the statement, and the profound effect it had on her: “Even in my stunned state, I knew this was not what it appeared to be: a freak accident with a clear plastic ball that lit up inside. I don’t believe in accidents. I know for sure that everything in life happens to help us live.” But despite her sadness, Oprah writes that she learned a valuable lesson from her dog’s passing: “This dog lived every moment as though it were her last…Her life was a gift to me. Her death, a greater one.” Oprah closes with the following statement: “Thank you for being my saving Gracie. I now know for sure angels come in all forms.”
