Ryan Reynolds Talks Tabloid Stories, ‘Van Wilder’ & How Discipline Helped Him Get Ripped

Ryan Reynolds may be happily in love with wife Scarlett Johansson, but being one half of a Hollywood super-couple comes at a price – tabloid stories.

“Ninety-nine point nine percent of it is just absurd,” Ryan told GQ magazine, which features the star on its October 2010 cover. “Silly, you know. And then maybe a relative will call me and ask if I adopted a baby from Ghana.”

Ryan told the mag that he and Scarlett have “not adopted anything,” but they don’t plan to remain a twosome forever, noting that he’s thinking of “a few years down the road, having a family.”

“That’s years away at this point,” he added.

The actor, who is gearing up for the October 8 release of “Buried,” a thriller in which he plays Paul Conroy, a man who is buried alive — and after that, the highly anticipated “Green Lantern” — revealed that he was once discouraged from heading to Hollywood to pursue his acting dream.

A director of an episode of “The X-Files,” which Ryan had a bit part in, told the actor, “I’d never make it there, first and foremost. And secondly, that I could have a very small yet profitable career here in Vancouver doing small parts,” he recounted. “It was a crushing moment, I must say. It was also inspiring, though.”

A few years later, one of Ryan’s big career breaks was the 2002 comedy “Van Wilder,” which made him, if not a household name, at least a college frat house one.

“It made me the party guy,” he told the mag. “I would walk into a bar and people would start lining up the shots.”

Nowadays, Ryan can pick his roles, no thanks in part to his dedication to his craft – especially the type that allowed him to get ripped for roles like “Green Lantern.”

“I have a discipline that has served me very well in my career and in my personal life… and that’s gotten stronger as I’ve gotten older,” he said. “I’ve always felt if I don’t just have a natural knack for it, I will just out-discipline the competition if I have to — work harder than anybody else.”
