Staff Blog: A ‘Beautiful Day’ For U2 (September 27, 2006)

It was a BEAUTIFUL DAY for U2 fans in New York as the boys from Dublin made a surprise appearance at the Union Square Barnes and Noble to autograph their new book, U2 BY U2. Fresh off an emotional performance on the field at the New Orleans Superdome the band was greeted by 25O lucky fans – some who had followed them all the way from Louisiana. Most had been chosen from a special lottery to attend the book signing.

In an exclusive interview, The Edge discussed the Foundation he has formed to help musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina, which is aimed at replacing their instruments. He told Access Hollywood “New Orleans without music is like Los Angeles without the film industry, it just won’t do.” Bono credited the Edge’s desire to help with U2’s involvement in the pregame performance.

The boys were eager to discuss their new book – part personal photographs, part intimate memories. The coffee table book features photos from throughout the band’s 25 year career, plus family snaps and even baby photos. U2 BY U2 follows the band thru their punk era and showcases dozens of different hair styles. One favorite photo shows the dads of The Edge, Larry, Adam and Bono… Guess which one is wearing shades? Bono told us, “they were all in Dublin at the same time, so we brought them into the studio and took it. I spent so much time fighting with my dad, but in the end, I realized it was his voice I am singing with.”

U2 BY U2 is in stores nationally.
