Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert performed their hit “Over You” in a touching tribute to victims of the Oklahoma tornado tragedy on Tuesday night’s “The Voice.”
After the show, Access Hollywood caught up with Blake to find out how the moving performance came about.
“[Miranda and I] were actually at the house cooking dinner after the show last night and [producer] Mark Burnett had come up to me at some point, and said, ‘Hey, you want to think about maybe doing something for the show tomorrow as a tribute to Oklahoma?’ And I thought about it and then last night we were cooking at the house and I told Miranda, I said, ‘Man, we should do ‘Over You,’” the “Voice” coach and country superstar told AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman. “That’s kind of what [the song’s] about is knowing somebody’s gone, but never really getting over it.
“That’s what a lot of people are going through there in Oklahoma now,” he added. “And it seemed like the perfect thing to do.”
As a native of Oklahoma, the tragedy hit especially hard for Blake.
“What’s going on there right now is unimaginable,” he said. “I mean, everything about that word is the only way to describe what’s going on in Moore, Oklahoma right now — and a lot of other smaller communities around the area that’s not getting the same attention because they weren’t as heavily populated. But a lot lives were destroyed because of several tornadoes in the last two days in Oklahoma and it’s really sad.”
And Blake’s support of the victims will reportedly continue.
The country star is organizing a telethon with NBC to raise funds for those affected by the deadly twister, according to Billboard.
“We’ll know more about it in the next 24 hours,” Blake told the mag on Tuesday night. “I’m hoping it will raise a lot of money. Obviously it will be televised and will happen really quickly.”
