UPDATE: ‘World Trade Center’ Succeeds Despite London Terror

NEW YORK (Aug. 10, 2006) Even with the terror plot in London gripping the nation, Oliver Stone’s “World Trade Center” picked up another $3.3 million Thursday at the box office.

With a $4.5 million box office opening Wednesday, the nation did not seem put off by the controversial subject matter of “WTC.”

“United 93” made $31 million in its entire run, so for “WTC” to make $4.5 on its first day (a Wednesday), that’s a good sign,? Access Hollywood?s Scott Mantz said.

But how will “WTC” fare over the weekend?

“The breaking news out of London could inspire Americans to fill theater seats in support of the movie, or they could seek an escape from the distressing news by seeing “Talladega Nights” again,” Mantz said.

And some of that money will go to several 9/11 charities, with ten percent of the five-day gross earmarked for the World Trade Center Memorial, Tuesday’s Children, The Tribute WTC Visitor Center and The New York Police & Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund.

The 10 percent will be divided in half:

Half of themoney will go to the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation for the construction of the two reflecting pools being built on the original footprints of the towers.

The other 50 percent will be shared equally among the remaining three charities.
