‘The Vampire Diaries” Final Season: CW Boss Says ‘Discussions’ Happening With Nina Dobrev

“The Vampire Diaries” is coming to a close, but could Mystic Falls see the return of Nina Dobrev’s Elena Gilbert before the series finale?

On Thursday, at The CW portion of the Television Critics Association Summer Tour, CW President Mark Pedowitz said there are talks to bring Nina back before the end of the show.

“There are discussions going on with Nina,” he said, in response to a question from AccessHollywood.com. “We’d love to have her come back. She was great for The CW. She was integral for ‘The Vampire Diaries.’

“These are discussions that go on. Hopefully she’ll be back, but should it not work out, Julie [Plec, ‘TVD’s’ executive producer] has planned a great series finale that’ll satisfy fans,” he added.

Asked about the decision to bring “TVD” to a close at the end of its upcoming eighth season, Pedowitz said it was a collective decision.

“We — [Warner Bros. Television President] Peter Roth and I and Julie — had discussions. We collectively came to the same place and Julie – Julie really got there before I think either Peter or I did, which was, this was the right time to end the series, go out in the right way,” he said, adding that they “backed Julie and her decision,” eventually making the announcement about Season 8 being the show’s last at Comic-Con last month.

After Thursday’s executive panel, Access asked The CW boss about the capacity in which he’d like to see Dobrev return to “TVD” if they can get her.

“As many as Julie thinks she needs her for,” he said.

“She was a great person to have [on the network], she was a great spokesperson for CW and for ‘The Vampire Diaries,'” he said. “She made a career decision, and for her, it was probably the right decision, but we’d love to her back. But again, if it cannot work out, Julie will… make a really satisfactory series finale.”
